Treasure Diving with Captain Dom - Special Archival Edition
by Yvonne Addario

This is a good layman's account of the equipment and procedures for underwater shipwreck salvage, applicable both to the underwater archaeologist and the treasure hunter, although the latter are a dying breed."

- Dr. Ray McAllister, Professor Emeritus, Ocean Engineering Florida Atlantic University,  Department of Ocean Engineering Boca Raton, Florida

"I found “Treasure Diving with Captain Dom” to be a very interesting and entertaining book.  The author takes you through some of the history behind the ships and shipwrecks, describes in plain language, vessel types and the kinds of cargos, explains how the wreck hunter performs his research, and the tools he uses to find them. The book is an easy read with large print and lots of photos, including many underwater shots.  This book will be enjoyed by adventurers of all ages!"

This year, diver Yvonne Addario reported recovering over 500 coins from a 1600's shipwreck in Jupiter Florida. In her latest book, she shares the experience in an effort to draw younger undersea explorers to begin the quest for sunken treasure. "Now more than ever, explorers need to know and understand that they can indeed find and recover their own treasures." Addario writes. A certified scuba diver alongside her husband, Captain Dominic Addario, Yvonne has been diving in the rock quarries of  .. . .read more by clicking on the Lost Treasure Link above.

"The thrill of a treasure hunt! I found this book to be an eye-opener to the world of undersea exploration and treasure hunting in Florida waters. Captain Dom and his author wife, Yvonne Addario have written a very informative "how to" treasure dive book. I absolutely enjoyed reading this book!"

“Set out in plain language, the book will have a broad audience, especially young people.  The font ("large print") makes it easy to read and appealing to young and old alike. Captain Dom inspires the dreamer in all of us."

"The Second Edition of Treasure Diving With Captain Dom - Special Archival Section has more for your money in content. Both first and second edition are well written in easy to understand language. I found both books very informative with beautiful color photos. The glossy stock which is used in the second edition as opposed to the mat finish paper stock used in the first edition are more vivid. The second edition has 4 more pages and is priced more moderately. All and all, the second edition is a better value. Treasure Diving With Captain Dom is a wonderful book for both young and old alike."

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!, April 20, 2008 Amazon.com

"This book explains the basics of treasure diving through the experience of a modern day pioneer that found treasure off the coast of Florida. His love of the sea and history brought him good fortune, but more importantly, a productive quest for innovative techniques so that others can enjoy treasure hunting. After reading this book, I feel that it is possible for anyone to stumble upon their own little piece of treasure--be it historic, a natural phenomenon, or gold coins. I moved to Florida three years ago, and have grown to love the ocean. I have taken up fishing, boating, sailing, snorkeling, surfing, and now look forward to dive lessons this summer. This is the only book that I have found that explains in easy terms the basics and background for treasure diving. My husband and I are excited to begin exploration. What an inspiration!"

“I was definitely enthralled. It really hit home and I felt like I was there with you and your dad. It was most enjoyable in an odd kind of way.”
Sharon L Jones-Otto - Loan Review/Final Documents
Freedom Mortgage
Clifton Park, NY
The loss of a parent is a natural course of events we expect in our lifetime, but we are seldom prepared to deal with the multitude of emotions and experiences that can occur during this time.  I lost my mother who was living the best she could with a sick heart.  We knew her time was limited on our earth, but when her sudden heart attack ended her life abruptly, we were all shocked by the event.  My father, on the other hand, died a slow dead from Parkinsonism, needing full time care and eventually starved to dead not being able to eat.  Like Yvonne, my siblings and I were not only dealing with the loss of our parent, but also with all the other losses that come from dealing with the declining health of our loved one and the frustration of working within a complex and overwhelming medical and social system. We are not only hurting for the loss of our parent, who has always been seen as a strong and enduring person, but also our own loss of power to make them better and often to provide them with the best of care we feel they should have.

Part of living is experiencing the loss of a parent, and the process is unique for each of us even when we travel this journey together with siblings.  Yvonne’s’  story details her experience not only with the declining health and eventual death of her mother, but also with trying to respect and understand her fathers’ and siblings’ actions  You can feel the confusion, frustration, and the love she experiences as she shares her families journey during this difficult time in their lives.  In the end, she is able to come to terms with her loss and her family’s desires.

Reviews for
Captain Dominic Addario

KEEPING THE AGE OF DISCOVERY ALIVE

In A Guide to Undersea Exploration, Dom Addario shares his enthusiasm for shipwrecks, diving, and exploration of the unknown. He discusses the techniques and science he has personally used to successfully document wreck sites and preserve artifacts. At the same time, he also addresses modern issues like responsibility, conservation, the law, and ethics. With all the pictures of coins and artifacts, divers will find this book inspiring.
John Chatteron - Professional Diver (Shadow Divers)
Finally, a book that reveals that there is more to treasure hunting than silver, gold and finders keepers. It's nice to hear from first-hand experiences of someone who has taken on the State of Florida (and won). The author writes of the less glorious parts of treasure salvage such as costs, permits, salvage techniques and more importantly, ethics morals and safety issues. This book is testimony to the fact that locating treasure is just the beginning.

A Book Review -

"A Guide to Responsible Undersea Exploration" by Capt. Dom Addario

This book is an honest approach to something that every new diver dreams about; finding an artifact or treasure while diving. While sharing from experience, Captain Dom details the how to and the why with easy to understand terminology. Being responsible to a point of preserving an archeological site is always an important discussion for divers.

Having worked as a diver on both treasure expeditions as archeological projects, I can attest to the fact that points made in this book are important. This book is not the complete guide to underwater historic
wreck excavating. However, it does cover enough for the novice to understand some of the complex steps required to satisfy preservation of a historic site. Documentation of an underwater site with the many variables is not an exact science. This book does a good job of detailing the need for a plan.

The book was written to be the text for a PADI Distinctive Specialty Course. Several good course outlines could be developed using this book for the basic course manual.

Captain Dom takes the reader on a journey through his experiences and passion for diving, recording, and processing artifacts from a historic wreck site. While sharing these experiences, the reader will gain an understanding of many other considerations that go along with the recovery aspects. Legal issues along with archeological concerns can and do make a difference in the process. The book includes great illustrations and photographs to help reinforce the topics.

Whether you are just getting started with your diving or a seasoned enthusiast, this book is a great read. Responsible conservation practices need to be addressed to all divers and this book covers the topic well in regards to historic sites.

Dean Hempel, PADI #4446
President - Sport Diver Solutions Corp

The author outlines the things you need to be aware of when swimming, snorkeling or diving in rivers, lakes and oceans. This book provides a wealth information should you come across what could be a significant find.

If you plan to go on a diving adventure, like I have, and have found what looks like a shipwreck with artifacts, you will know what to do. FINDER’S KEEPERS is not the best action to take. You need to read this book!
