THE BOOK Recollections of a Mother
copyright 2019 |
Description: While this book was written for family—the boys in particular—there may be readers who don’t fall into that category. We know there are some family friends who will be interested and some of them may not be familiar with all of the protagonists themselves. So, a bit of background. Dave and I spent some thirty years as United Methodist missionaries in North Africa, with four years out in Montreal, Canada, for study, as well as a year of study earlier in Hartford, CT. More than half of those years were spent, among other things, acquiring and raising four boys. This book is not a standard missionary book. I will not be telling stories of conversions that will bring tears to your eyes. Those are not my stories to tell—and in a Muslim country, they were rather few and far between in any case. Our mission was rather to build bridges of understanding; and our activities were geared to “living love” and making friends, which we learned was a witness that could be widely understood and not easily misconstrued. The stories are basically true and accurate accounts of missionary life as one missionary family lived it and will, we hope, bring laughter to your heart. |

The loss of a parent is a natural course of events we expect in our lifetime, but we are seldom prepared to deal with the multitude of emotions and experiences that can occur during this time. I lost my mother who was living the best she could with a sick heart. We knew her time was limited on our earth, but when her sudden heart attack ended her life abruptly, we were all shocked by the event. My father, on the other hand, died a slow dead from Parkinsonism, needing full time care and eventually starved to dead not being able to eat. Like Yvonne, my siblings and I were not only dealing with the loss of our parent, but also with all the other losses that come from dealing with the declining health of our loved one and the frustration of working within a complex and overwhelming medical and social system. We are not only hurting for the loss of our parent, who has always been seen as a strong and enduring person, but also our own loss of power to make them better and often to provide them with the best of care we feel they should have. Part of living is experiencing the loss of a parent, and the process is unique for each of us even when we travel this journey together with siblings. Yvonne’s’ story details her experience not only with the declining health and eventual death of her mother, but also with trying to respect and understand her fathers’ and siblings’ actions You can feel the confusion, frustration, and the love she experiences as she shares her families journey during this difficult time in their lives. In the end, she is able to come to terms with her loss and her family’s desires. |

Description: A GOOD PLACE TO GROW UP MIAMI BEACH IN THE “40”s Paul's story about living in Miami Beach, Florida. He takes you down the sidewalks of his neighborhood, sharing his life's experiences. "One of the best things about Miami Beach is the sidewalks. Besides being well laid-out, and well-constructed, they had their own unique color; a sort of light red, not pink or coral, just light red. Believe me, I covered every inch of those sidewalks in my neighborhood. Six square blocks, from Dade Blvd to 20th St, and from Alton Road to Purdy Ave. Surrounded by water on three sides, except Alton, it was a very exciting neighborhood. Modest homes and small Apartments mixed with many, and varied, businesses and industries. Let me tell you about it." - Author Paul Kelly |

Description: A Commemorative Book dedicated to the author's father, Frank Malcolm Cunningham, Senior 1927 - 1978. This is the accounting of the racially abused community of Riviera Beach, Florida, a port city, who rallied together on April 17th, 1962 and won a City Council Election. Many have forgotten that Riviera Beach, Florida was a safe haven to Rosewood survivors as well as recently freed Negroes migrating from the clutches of Slavery, indentured servitude and field work. Safely located in Riviera Beach still did not offer opportunities except to serve the Town of Palm Beach. Prevalent also were substandard and impassable roads where pot holes caused damage to cars. Slow drainage after monsoon rains, hurricanes and other natural disasters made the issue of neglect worse. Many have long forgotten how Riviera Beach Citizens endured taxation without representation. The disrespect offered from a people privileged to live on ocean front, while inland residents made due. Speaking out or voicing discontent to local government was risky business. The story of Frank Malcolm Cunningham, my father, is a magical story, a quick and enjoyable read. Try it, you’ll be enlightened and have an appreciation of how his courage positively affected a noxious era of development in an American City and region. .
